I've been behind on my Oscar contenders this year. In previous years when competing for one of only five slots, I'd say not a chance. It's much too small-scale and doesn't have that big thematic Importance that helps get a lot of films over the hump. (Last year, "The Reader" was nominated in large part because it was a lofty and portentous Holocaust movie, not because it was better than "The Dark Knight" or "WALL-E.") Now that the Best Picture race is expanded to ten films, all bets are off. "An Education" certainly has the reviews to back it up, and it has the potential to do fairly well for itself at the critics awards. However, I still think Best Picture might be kind of a long-shot. It did scare me, but it also made me laugh, in a good way. I could see the old Raimi in some of those scenes, particularly the seance scenes with Adriana Barraza. Straight back to the Evil Dead days.
